Well, I know this will open up a storm of comments but I really want to address this issue with my ‘two cents’ on the subject. There seems to be some crazy debate over whether or not stores should or should not open up on the night of Thanksgiving for early Black Friday shoppers to grab some deals. This has been a ridiculous controversy in my opinion.
It is a PERSONAL decision if you wish to shop or not that day and it is a BUSINESS decision if they choose to be open or closed that day. If what I wanted was at a store that waited to open on Friday or Saturday, then that’s when I’d be there.
What ever happened to each person celebrating holidays how THEY choose? Why have we become so hell bent in our society on everyone conforming to OUR personal beliefs instead of letting them live by their own?!?! What about all of the people who make reservations at restaurants for Thanksgiving dinner? People WORK at restaurants! They are there serving other people’s families instead of being home with their own…. What about the military – they are doing their job on the holidays, should they get that day off too? I mean they are not home with their families because they have to work, right? What about hospitals? Nursing homes? Should they shut down on Thanksgiving because the staff needs to be home with their families? They don’t get that luxury – its an inherent part of that career field and is working a lot of extra hours during the holiday shopping season when you work in the retail industry.
These same people who are stomping their feet and pouting about stores being open on Thanksgiving as the same people that criticize the Thanksgiving shopping, then go to a movie on Christmas Day. I can’t buy a TV on Thanksgiving but they can buy a movie ticket and popcorn on CHRISTmas? Hmmmm… well as a Christian I am offended by that so should we now require everyone to close that day also?
My friend Kelly posted this on her Facebook early today (and said I could go ahead and share this on my blog):
All I have to say to her post is AMEN SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT OUT LOUD!
I watch as the debates rage on across social media then I peek at some of the pages of the complainers…. these same people also post on and on about how lazy welfare recipients are and they should all have to get jobs. NEWSFLASH…. the same people upset they can CHOOSE to shop that night or not would then complain about all of those workers who quit their retail positions just so they do not have to work Thanksgiving night would then complain about those same people on welfare and jobless!
Did anyone also stop to think that these same people (1) chose a job in retail knowing full well the inherent hours that come during the holiday season with that career? or (2) maybe those workers WANT that extra cash they get that day to do their own shopping for those same families you say they should spend time with (not saying they all enjoy working that day but some may actually not care because it is their income and obviously they need that income if they are working there to earn it).
Why is is that the only major complainers I seem to see online are NOT the ones actually working those jobs? And in the next post after their rants they gear up for Black Friday. Hmm.. maybe those same people you say should not work on Thanksgiving are sick of getting up at 2am to go open up the stores for you on Friday and that should stop too?
You may not like the choices businesses make for their retail hours during the holidays – and if you don’t like it then don’t work retail – but 99.999% of people who take jobs in retail KNOW they will be working a lot this time of year not to mention the droves of people hired specifically ONLY for holiday season hours… so I think a lot of people need to get off their high horses and drop it – JUST SAYIN’
