Be a Blessing to Others

Be a Blessing to Others

Earlier today, I went to lunch with my husband. As we sat there we saw a homeless man come in and buy a drink with some change he had. He was carrying a Bible with him.  Then, we watched as he walked outside and sat in the grass next to a sign to enjoy his drink. The temperature here was close to 100 degrees and he sat in the hot sun, with no shade anywhere to be found.

We both kept glancing out to see if he had any food – he did not. As we got up to leave, my husband said out loud what we were both thinking – we could not stop thinking about the man and his Bible all through lunch. My husband went up and ordered a bunch of food worth more than our meals combined and walked out and gave it to this man as I started our car.

One reason I work from home is to earn and income and support my family, yes. But to me an income should represent so much more than that. I see so many people earning at their chosen professions but never giving back – just posting about new cars, new houses, extravagant vacations….  and I know that many of them never give back to those in need they come across in life. They are about earning for themselves and forget that this freedom and wealth they enjoy is a gift.

This post is not to ask for approval for our action – that is not at all my intent – I do not need approval or praise to help those in need – what this post IS however is a reminder to those who do not give to open your hearts to those in need.

As we make more money, we tend to spend more money. We must all remember that we are merely stewards of “our” riches, as they originated from God. Don’t let your riches steal your heart away from Him. If you find this happening, change your outlook on your income. Perhaps God didn’t give it to you to consume all of it, perhaps He gave it to you to share and bless others.

For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’{Deuteronomy 15:11}

New Life: Chapter 1

New Life: Chapter 1

So many things are changing for me. My new fitness and weight loss journey. My husband has a new job. We have a new home in a new city and state. Literally every part of my life is starting a new chapter all at the same time. Talk about starting with a clean slate! LOL

Change can be scary. I know moving for sure is – it is a huge change for us, although not the first time we have started somewhere new but this one is a big opportunity for our family so we could not have said no to it. But in most ways I am ready to embrace this change. This clean slate to completely “reinvent” my entire life all at one time. Not many people will get that opportunity but here it is – laid out before me ready for me to grab hold of it and run (trust me that is a metaphor – I am NOT a runner!)

So, Monday is the start of a fresh life. New workout routine, new meal plan, new home, new everything. Here we go…

Saturday. Planning Day.

Saturday. Planning Day.

I have worked with my coach and mentor (yes – even a coach needs a coach and a support system!) to pick the right path for me to travel on. Working on an eating plan, what fitness program to follow, and talking about some other things with her. Sometimes your body simply gets ‘stuck’ and you need to change your plan up to get it moving again. Sometimes you also need to add certain supplements to your routine to get your body moving!

We have had a LOT going on here the last 3 weeks and I will admit it – I have not been a good eater, I have not been exercising like I should. So now its time to get the scale out of the moving boxes and takes some pictures and get started again.

I know me – I know I need a plan laid out. Thats how I am. I am a planner. I love to see things checked off my daily list so I know that the program she and I set up will be perfect for me to follow!

Why am I telling you all this? Because I want to keep myself accountable while inspiring others to take control of their health. Because I want you all to know that just because you stumble along the way does not mean you have failed unless you never get started again.

So here I am, meal planning for the week and getting ready to jump into my new routine. Are you a planner or do you just jump right into thing?

The Family Weight Loss Game

The Family Weight Loss Game

Is weight weighing heavily on your mind? If you or someone in your family needs to lose weight, you have lots of company: Nearly two-thirds of American adults and a third of American children need to lighten up.

My husband started going to the gym with me today and that of course promoted our son to also now want to workout too! He already eats pretty healthy because we select foods at the grocery store together and he now prefers fruits over cookies and things.

Now that my husband is in the gym I have a better advantage when it comes to getting him to eat better at home – which will also make a great impact on our son with a positive influence in his future health and weight as he grows – there is nothing better than teaching your child by living what you preach!

Since the family is one of the most powerful influences on a child’s weight and health, i have been trying to cook as healthy as possible at home. Maps out a game plan of simple steps that you as a parent can take for improving your own healthy habits while allowing your kids to become more active and “grow into” a healthier weight. Parents are the role model and coach of the family team – EXACTLY what my husband and I are doing now – TOGETHER (I knew I would rub off on him eventually).

My son also decided he wants to workout too (unfortunately our gym will not allow kids to workout with mom and dad until they are 11 years old) so we dug out my PiYo Workout DVDs and he and I will do one each day after school together – he actually like doing yoga from when he was at Connections Academy and LOVES it (truth be told I think he is actually better at yoga than I am!!!)

The family that plays together enjoys good health and has fun together. In becoming more active and enjoying a wide variety of delicious meals, any family can be “winners” and gain healthy habits for a lifetime. Just provides realistic steps for your family to take toward better health.

My family is taking all the steps we need to do this as a team – how about yours?

Day 1 in the Gym

Day 1 in the Gym

I did it – I got myself out to the door and to the gym for day 1 of my new fitness routine! I got up this morning and got myself ready as my son was eating his breakfast before school. We headed out the door and hung out in the car at the bus stop like we do each morning.

Then he was off and I headed for the gym.

I have to say I am truly proud of myself to not just going to the gym but doing SIXTY minutes of cardio!  Now I will admit that the first 5 to 10 min my legs felt like they were sore and burning. I was thinking to myself  “seriously less than 5 minutes and I feel like I am dying already?!?!?”

Slender Suzie Day 1 at the Gym for my Workout and Sweating Like a Pig

I pushed through that at a slower pace on the elliptical and after a bit I was able to continue.  I ended up finishing a full 30 minutes on the elliptical!!  I took a short 5 min break then got on what is now my new favorite piece of gym equipment the Cybex Arc Trainer – seriously I am in LOVE with that thing!  I did another full 30 minutes on that machine as well.  Yes that’s right – 60 minutes of cardio DONE!

Cybex Arc Trainer is my new favorite piece of gym equipment Slender Suzie

As you know I had every intention of getting with a trainer to set up what I need to do each day to help accelerate my weight loss and build lean muscle. But, my new gym (which is our local YMCA and the only gym anywhere near me) currently has no personal trainers on staff so I spent last night researching the best routine to follow as a gym newbie.  Here is what I came up with (note that since I am starting on a Tuesday I actually started with cardio today):

Monday – Cardio

  • 60 minutes on machines of choice (2 machines at 30 minutes each with 5 min rest period between or 3 machines at 20 minutes each with 5 minute rest period between)

Tuesday – Full Body Beginner Gym Routine

  • Squats on Leg Press Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Seated Leg Curl Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Seated Leg Extension Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Seated Chest Press Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Seated Row Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Seated Tricep Extension Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Preacher Curl Machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Abdominal Crunch machine (3 sets of 15 reps)
  • Back Extension on Roman Chair (3 sets of 15 reps)

Wednesday – Cardio

  • 60 minutes on machines of choice (2 machines at 30 minutes each with 5 min rest period between or 3 machines at 20 minutes each with 5 minute rest period between)

So there you have it – my beginner level workout routine.  I will be following this for approximately 2 weeks and then I will reevaluate if this has become too easy so I can then move to a higher level workout (so be sure you check back to get that copy too – if you subscribe to the blog in the upper left you will be sure you do not miss the update.)

I am proud that I woke up and help my self personally accountable to get started – and that I have my Facebook community holding me accountable as well (that added social pressure truly helps me to not want to mess up or slack off).

If you have a fitness routine – share with me in the comments – I would love to hear what kinds of workouts you do or how this post may help you in getting started!

Holy Cow – I Joined a Gym!

Holy Cow – I Joined a Gym!

Well here we go… I am listening to my “inner voice” and going for it… EEEK

(by the way I am still not the most comfortable in front of a camera but I am doing it anyway! Hey at least I am REAL)

DECLARE YOUR 7 DAY GOAL PUBLICLY TODAY – COMMENT BELOW AND DECLARE YOURS!!!

When you declare a goal, you’re telling the world you will not fail! If you really want it, declare it publicly – like I just did! Stating your goal publicly adds accountability, social pressure and produces results. I found that those who did not state their goals, were far less likely to achieve them. If you really want it, you have to believe it and if you believe it…you will post it!
